Proper CBD training and education need to be put in place so that everyone on your team is able to inform your customers with the right information.

CBD Training Points for Your Employees

  • The Endocannabinoid System: The endocannabinoid system is a relatively new discovery and is not taught in schools. However, this biochemical communicative system is very important, especially when it comes to CBD education. The more your employees know about this lock-and-key system that’s built into our biology, the better they’ll be able to explain CBD efficacy.
  • CBD Benefits: It is crucial for your employees to use the magic word test when discussing CBD benefits. They need to understand that the majority of CBD research is actually preclinical or animal and that no product is FDA approved. Providing summaries of some of the more relevant studies can help your employees discuss these potential benefits and how CBD may benefit your customers in different ways.
  • Drug Interactions: Since CBD temporarily deactivates the p450 cytochrome system, there are potential drug interactions. This system is responsible for metabolizing about 60% of traditional pharmaceuticals and supplements. Make sure that your employees are aware of CBD drug interactions and to always recommend that your customers speak to their healthcare professional before taking CBD. Grapefruit disables the same enzymes, making it a comparable talking point with guests. Since topical products don’t interact with the liver, topical CBD options won’t pose the same risk.
  • Age Restrictions: Currently, there are no age restrictions for CBD purchasing except for vape products and smokeable CBD products. Anything designed for vaping or smoking is only intended for individuals 18 and up and will require a driver’s license for age verification. It is up to your discretion if you’d like to restrict certain age groups from purchasing your CBD products.
  • CBD Product Differentiations: Your employees should have a solid understanding of the differences between full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolate. This can help them make better product recommendations to your customers. Having some good working knowledge on terpenes can also be beneficial since so many CBD products have added terpenes for intended benefits.
  • Drug Testing: The minimal THC content found in full-spectrum CBD products is enough to trigger a false positive for any customer taking a drug test. It’s a good idea to disclose this information to customers interested in full-spectrum products.
  • CBD Legality: It is crucial for your employees to understand that hemp-derived CBD products are legal in all 50 states but are required to have 0.3% THC or less. While it may not be necessary for your employees to know specific state laws, having them be aware that some states don’t allow CBD to be driven across their state lines can be helpful. If you have a customer visiting from out of state, your employees will be able to relay that information.
  • CBD Dosage: Training your employees on CBD dosage practice will be very helpful for your customers. They’ll need to understand that everyone has different cannabinoid sensitivities and endocannabinoid deficiencies, meaning that the dosage relies on the self-experimentation process. There isn’t a one-dose-fits-all and your employees will need to feel comfortable explaining that.
  • Nursing or Pregnant Women: Topical products are fine but anything ingestible or smokeable needs to have a disclaimer that they may not be safe for nursing or pregnant women. Your employees should know that CBD isn’t necessarily dangerous but there isn’t enough data to make definitive claims regarding safety for this demographic. Recommend that they should speak to their healthcare professionals before trying CBD.
  • CBD Basics: In addition to everything we’ve outlined above, your employees should know all the basics of CBD. This basic information should include answers to standard questions like “Will CBD get me high?”, “Can you overdose on CBD?”, and so on. These questions are important for any consumer, especially for those that aren’t familiar with CBD.
